Zielony Balonik is a small book club that meets in Edinburgh or Glasgow and specializes in contemporary Polish literature. Members come from a wide range of backgrounds, from Polish born academics, the children of post WW2 settlers, to ‘friends’ who enjoy all things Polish. There is no requirement to speak Polish.
I was invited to speak about The Long Bridge: Out of the Gulags by Urszula Muskus in February 2014 at a meeting held in the library of The New Club in Princes Street, Edinburgh. I enjoyed my time there very much, stimulated by the enthusiasm for Babusia’s book.
The Long Bridge: Out of the Gulags was published in October 2010 and the paper back sold steadily but slowly. The reaction of the few who found and read it was tremendous and led to great reviews. A slow burner, it was spreading by word of mouth.
In April 2013 the book was lucky enough to be Kindle.UK Deal of the Day. It shot to Kindle No.1 Best Seller for two days and has stayed well up in the Best Biographies since. I was so excited that I forgot to take a screenshot when it was No.1 on the Best Seller list, hence just Biogs in the photo, but note it is beating Slave Girl! Here are the numbers
- Paperback sold 1,500 in 2.5 years.
- Kindle sold 10,500 in 2.5 days.
Yes, the Power of Kindle! Maybe Kindle is a leveling field where unknown authors can compete with celebs based on the quality of content via the reviews. Amazon is not perfect, but it has come up trumps this time!
